Mayor Lim Byeongtaek: "A Starting Point for Economic Revitalization and Tourism Hub Development"

On July 28, Siheung City in Gyeonggi Province announced that it will begin a trial operation of a “fully open-top double-decker bus” connecting Oido and Turtle Island with a “circular city tour” starting from the 30th.

A fully open-top double-decker bus refers to a bus with the front section of the second floor open. Passengers can enjoy panoramic views without any visual obstacles while traveling on the bus. While some local governments have previously operated city tour buses with rear open-top double-decker buses, Siheung City explained that this is the first case of introducing a fully open-top model.

The city will initially introduce one bus and operate it on a trial basis for two months from July 30 to September 30. After the trial period, the city plans to analyze route efficiency, boarding demand, and tourist satisfaction.

The bus route is a circular course that starts at Turtle Island Promotion Center, passes through Oido Prehistoric Heritage Park, Oido Museum, and Turtle Island Marina, and then returns to Turtle Island Promotion Center. Passengers can freely get off at each stop to enjoy sightseeing.

The bus is equipped with a GPS-based audio guide system in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese. In addition, a cultural tourism commentator will be on board to provide guided explanations of the attractions.

The bus operates every week from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The interval between departures is one hour, and the last boarding time is 7:00 p.m. Boarding is on a first-come, first-served basis, so passengers can simply wait at their desired stop without a reservation. Upon boarding, passengers receive a wrist ticket and take their seat. During the trial operation period, the service is free of charge. Starting in October, after the trial period ends, the service will become a regular paid operation.

The city expects that the introduction of this circular route will strengthen the connection between local businesses and tourist routes, leading to increased tourism spending.

Lim Byeongtaek, Mayor of Siheung, said, “This city tour bus marks the starting point of Siheung-style tourism policies aimed at revitalizing the local economy and developing tourism hubs. We will continue to create new future value for Siheung with selectable tourism content that satisfies both citizens and visitors.”
