A workation is a portmanteau of "work" and "vacation." It is a new way of working that allows people to perform their usual work duties outside the office while simultaneously enjoying tourism and leisure.
Gyeonggi Province decided to introduce the workation project following the enactment of the "Ordinance on the Promotion and Support of Tourism Industry Linked to Work and Vacation in Gyeonggi Province" in March of last year.
The workation locations include: Dongducheon Natural Recreation Forest; Pocheon Damhwajae Cafe & Stay and Hanwha Resort Sanjeong Lake Ansi; Yeoncheon Baekhak Jayuro Resort and Saedungji Village; Gapyeong Jaraseom Workation Center; and Paju Peace Nuri Campsite. All these locations are well-known destinations in northern Gyeonggi, offering excellent accessibility from the Seoul metropolitan area and beautiful natural surroundings.
Those wishing to participate can visit the workation operator's website, select their preferred location, and apply.
The program is only available on weekdays (Monday to Thursday, based on accommodation), and applicants must book at least two nights. Eligible applicants include employees of private companies and public institutions, public officials, and sole proprietors.
Individuals or groups, including residents of Gyeonggi Province as well as anyone else, may apply. When applying, participants must submit a business registration certificate and a certificate of employment. After participating, they must provide photographic evidence of their workation and complete a survey.
In particular, participants will receive an accommodation subsidy of 50,000 won per night, which reduces the cost to as low as 40,000 won for a two-night stay. In addition, participants will be provided with travel insurance and the "Gyeonggi Tour Pass," which grants access to over 160 popular tourist attractions and cafes in Gyeonggi Province.
Gyeonggi Province expects this project to increase interest in workations among companies and workers in the Seoul metropolitan area, and to contribute to the spread of a more flexible work culture. The use of the "Gyeonggi Tour Pass" is also expected to encourage visits to tourist sites in the province during non-working hours.
Jang Hyangjeong, Director of the Tourism Industry Division at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Workers often have to travel long distances to experience a workation, so we launched this project to provide an opportunity to experience a new daily routine nearby in Gyeonggi Province. We hope that participants will not only improve their work efficiency through workations but also experience the many attractions of northern Gyeonggi."
