Increased Intra-abdominal Pressure as the Cause
Tight Clothing Can Seriously Harm Health
British singer and actress Suki Waterhouse (33) has revealed that she suffered a hernia due to wearing excessively tight skinny jeans.
On July 20 (local time), according to U.S. entertainment media outlet People and other foreign media, Waterhouse shared an update on her health via her social media, posting a photo of herself in a hospital gown. She stated, "Six months ago, I developed a hernia after wearing pants that were way too tight," adding, "I was afraid to talk about it for a while, but now I want to share it."

Among the photos she posted, one shows her lying in a hospital bed, while another reportedly captures her on stage during a performance wearing leather pants. It has been reported that Waterhouse frequently wore such tight-fitting outfits during her North American tour, which took place from September to December last year. She has since undergone surgery and is currently recovering.
A hernia is a condition in which an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, and it can occur in any part of the body. In particular, an 'inguinal hernia,' which occurs in the groin area, is most common.
According to experts, wearing clothes that tightly compress the abdomen for extended periods or habits that put excessive pressure on the waist can increase intra-abdominal pressure and become a cause of hernias. Although rare, it is explained that tight clothing like skinny jeans can cause a hernia if it compresses the groin area. Initially, there may be no noticeable symptoms, making it easy to overlook, but as the protruding organ becomes compressed, pain may develop, and the bulging area can become more prominent when standing or when intra-abdominal pressure increases, such as during coughing.

In addition, such tight clothing can impede proper blood circulation and negatively affect health. Wearing highly constrictive clothes like skinny jeans for long periods can disrupt blood flow in the lower body, potentially leading to varicose veins in the legs or coldness and swelling in the lower limbs, known as haje naengjeung.
Compressing the body can also lead to back pain and neuralgia. In particular, people who already suffer from musculoskeletal disorders such as scoliosis may experience worsened symptoms if they wear tight-fitting outfits, as the pressure on the spinal nerves increases.
Waterhouse is in a common-law relationship with British actor Robert Pattinson, who appeared in director Bong Joonho's film "Mickey 17," and reportedly gave birth to their first daughter in March last year.
