Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, expressed his deep sorrow regarding the human rights violation incident involving migrant workers at a brick factory in Naju.
On July 25, through his Facebook page, Governor Kim stated, "There was a shocking report about a migrant worker being tied to a forklift in our region recently," and added, "I was shocked and deeply saddened by the occurrence of such an unimaginable human rights violation that brings shame to our country."
He continued, "So this morning, I postponed all other matters to meet and console the migrant worker who was victimized." He wrote, "The young Sri Lankan victim appeared withdrawn, possibly due to trauma. It was heartbreaking to see him anxious about facing even greater disadvantages while already suffering from mistreatment in a foreign country far from home."
Governor Kim further explained, "Jeollanam-do values foreign workers highly, and we are actively recommending to the government that those who work diligently be granted permanent residency." He added, "I promised that we will thoroughly conduct fact-finding investigations and provide human rights education at all workplaces to ensure such incidents never happen again."
Finally, Governor Kim emphasized once again, "We must take this incident as a lesson and never allow such heartbreaking events to be repeated." He stressed, "Jeollanam-do will immediately begin a comprehensive fact-finding investigation and human rights education for migrant workers and other socially vulnerable groups, in active cooperation with government authorities."
