Damyang County in Jeollanam-do (Governor Jeong Cheolwon) announced on July 25 that it has selected an emergency fundraising campaign for flood damage recovery as a designated project under the Hometown Love Donation Program and has launched a fundraising effort with a target of 100 million won.
According to the county, a record-breaking average of 538mm of heavy rain fell over five days starting from July 16. Thanks to preemptive measures, there were no casualties. However, there were 1,444 cases of private property damage, including houses and farmland, and around 600 people were displaced. The total amount of damage reported so far exceeds 17.5 billion won.
This fundraising campaign is aimed at supporting recovery efforts and assisting residents in Damyang, which was the first area in Jeollanam-do to be designated as a special disaster zone. All funds raised will be used exclusively for Damyang County’s recovery projects.
Governor Jeong Cheolwon stated, "I kindly ask for the warm interest and participation of the public so that our residents, who have lost their homes due to this heavy rain, can return to their daily lives as soon as possible," and added, "The funds raised will be used with care for swift recovery and support for those affected."
Donations can be made until September 30 through the public platform ‘Hometown Love eum’ and the private platform ‘WeGive,’ both part of the Hometown Love Donation Program. Under this program, individuals can donate up to 20 million won per year to local governments other than their place of residence. Donations up to 100,000 won are fully tax-deductible, and amounts exceeding that receive a 16.5% tax deduction. Donors will also receive gifts equivalent to 30% of their donation amount.
Meanwhile, if a designated donation is made to Damyang County, which was declared a special disaster zone, within three months from the declaration date (July 22), the tax deduction rate for the excess portion will be increased to 33%.
