Collapsed in Front of Hospital... New Nurse on Her Way Home Saves Unconscious Patient

Immediate CPR Performed Upon Discovery

"The nurse saved my life."

According to Dong-A University Hospital on July 25, a 36-year-old patient, identified as A, visited the emergency room at Dong-A University Hospital on July 11 due to chest pain. After showing improvement, A was discharged. However, while returning home, A's symptoms worsened again, and A collapsed in front of the hospital's main gate while trying to return.

The person who witnessed this was nurse Park Jiyoon, a new staff member who joined the hospital in May. Park was on her way home from work but immediately rushed over and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A regained consciousness at the scene. Following Park's request, the emergency medical team was dispatched and transported A to the emergency room. Afterwards, the patient was admitted to the hospital and recovered health.

Although A experienced another cardiac arrest later, A recovered after receiving additional CPR and intensive care unit treatment, and was safely discharged on July 25.

During this time, A recognized nurse Park Jiyoon in the new ward and expressed gratitude, saying, "This nurse is the lifesaver who saved me."

A's primary physician stated, "Thanks to the CPR performed immediately after the collapse, the patient was able to recover quickly without brain damage," and added, "The calm and swift response of the new nurse was decisive."

Meanwhile, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that maintains blood circulation during cardiac arrest or respiratory failure to prevent brain damage. It can be performed by ordinary people and is critical in improving survival rates. The steps for performing CPR are: upon finding a collapsed person, first check for consciousness, ask bystanders for help, or if no one is nearby, call 119 yourself.
