Full Replacement of Coal Facilities Announced by 2031
First Step Toward Carbon Neutrality...
"We Aim to Enhance Sustainability"
GS Gumi Combined Heat and Power Plant will introduce an eco-friendly turbine that burns hydrogen and natural gas instead of coal. The coal phase-out project, which transforms aging coal-fired combined heat and power plants into clean energy facilities, is now being actively implemented under private sector leadership.
On July 25, GS Gumi Combined Heat and Power announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Doosan Enerbility at GS Tower in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to promote the "GS Gumi Combined Heat and Power Plant Modernization Project." Through this agreement, the existing outdated coal facilities will be completely replaced with high-efficiency facilities based on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen fuel. The signing ceremony was attended by Lee Junggyun, CEO of GS Gumi Combined Heat and Power, and Yoon Yohan, Head of Power Service Sales at Doosan Enerbility.

The project aims for completion in 2031. It involves converting the existing coal-fired combined heat and power facility, which has been in operation for over 30 years, into a medium-sized gas turbine (DGT-100) and steam turbine-based facility that can operate using hydrogen as the sole fuel. GS Gumi Combined Heat and Power will operate the plant, while Doosan Enerbility will be responsible for supplying and maintaining the main equipment.
The DGT-100 turbine, currently being developed by Doosan Enerbility, is a gas turbine capable of "100% hydrogen combustion," meaning it can use hydrogen as its sole fuel. It can also be operated with a blend of hydrogen and natural gas. Domestic demonstration is underway with the goal of commercial operation in 2028.
Lee Junggyun, CEO of GS Gumi Combined Heat and Power, stated, "This agreement is a practical starting point for an eco-friendly energy transition that aligns with the policy objective of coal phase-out," and added, "We will establish a stable and eco-friendly supply base so that companies in the Gumi Industrial Complex can use energy in a sustainable way."
