Promoting Comprehensive Safety Management
Across Busan Port Construction, Operations, and Facilities
Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Song Sanggeun) is making significant efforts to ensure the safety of port workers during the peak summer heat.
On the 25th, BPA announced that it is thoroughly managing on-site safety to prevent accidents and heat-related illnesses among port workers caused by the summer heatwave.
Earlier this month, BPA provided heatwave response supplies such as cool masks and sunshades to more than 2,000 port workers. In July, a special inspection team was formed to intensively check for safety hazards throughout Busan Port.
Since the 14th and continuing until the 31st, the BPA Construction Division has been conducting special safety inspections for both the summer heat and rainy season at port construction sites. The Port Regeneration Project Group, which manages the North Port Redevelopment Project, is also closely examining the safety management status, focusing on the second phase of the marina construction site and other key areas.
The inspection team, following the Ministry of Employment and Labor's "Summer Heatwave and Heat Illness Prevention Guide," visited sites including Busan New Port, Jinhae New Port, and the North Port Redevelopment Project. They comprehensively checked the management of high-temperature exposure risk areas, the installation of sunshades and cooling fans, the availability of worker rest areas, and the operation of rest periods. Additionally, more than 200 on-site workers received heatwave prevention items such as cooling towels, ice packs, and beverages.
On the 24th, the BPA Gamcheon Office, together with the Busan Port Workers' Union Gamcheon and Southwest Branches, conducted an on-site safety campaign. More than 20 participants visited each branch’s workplaces to distribute safety sunshades and heatwave response supplies.
Measures to prevent power outages and fires due to increased electricity usage during the heatwave are also being implemented. From the 23rd to the 25th, BPA inspected the electrical and air conditioning equipment at multipurpose facilities such as the North Port and New Port substations, the New Port Ungdong Sewage Treatment Plant, and the passenger terminal. The inspections focused on summer peak power response, the operational status of fire-fighting equipment, and compliance with electrical safety rules, including checking the multi-tap connections for air conditioning units.
Song Sanggeun, President of BPA, stated, "I deeply thank all the on-site workers who are dedicated to port construction and operations despite the extreme heat," and emphasized, "We will do our utmost to create a safe working environment in preparation for abnormal high temperatures and heatwaves."
Song Hoon, head of the Port Regeneration Project Group, is inspecting the site management status of the Bukhang Marina yacht onshore stacking facility.
