Launch of "Amberware" Featuring High-Performance Plastics
Enhanced Durability, Suitable for Microwave and Dishwasher Use
Global chemical company BASF will supply its high-performance plastic material "Ultrason" to Japanese plastic manufacturer Kyoraku.
On July 25, BASF announced that it has supplied plastic materials to Kyoraku in Japan and supported the launch of the reusable tableware brand "Amberware." The product applied this time, "Ultrason E 3010," is a polyethersulfone (PESU) material that features a bright and transparent amber color, along with excellent heat resistance and durability. It can be used stably from minus 30 degrees Celsius to 180 degrees Celsius, and can withstand up to 220 degrees Celsius for short periods. It is also suitable for use in microwaves and dishwashers.
Problems such as discoloration and performance degradation, which have been pointed out as disadvantages of conventional plastic products, have also been improved. Even when exposed to ultraviolet light, the color naturally deepens, but the performance remains unchanged, enabling long-term use. Kyoraku has offered a "lifetime warranty" against cracking and breakage for this product.
Amberware is attracting attention as an alternative to disposable plastics, as it is lighter and unbreakable compared to traditional ceramic tableware, making it suitable for use in restaurants, takeout stores, and general households. BASF stated, "By applying customized Ultrason grades, it is possible to develop a wide variety of reusable products."
Ultrason is BASF's flagship high-performance plastic brand. In addition to the polyethersulfone used this time, there are various product lines such as polysulfone (Ultrason S) and polyphenylsulfone (Ultrason P). Beyond tableware, Ultrason is also used in lightweight automotive and aerospace parts, as well as precision filtration membranes.
