Professor Lee Beomsik, also known as the "Left Foot Doctor" and an adjunct professor at Yeungnam University College, entered Gyeongju on July 24 as part of his nationwide trek to wish for the successful hosting of the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit and the harmony between East and West.
According to Gyeongju City, Professor Lee has been relying solely on his left foot, starting from Mudeungsan in Gwangju on July 7 and continuing his walking journey for a total of 22 days, covering approximately 400 kilometers.
Mayor Ki Moon Choi of Yeongcheon is welcoming Professor Beomsik Lee, known as the "Left Foot Doctor," who is walking across the city, in the city hall lobby on the 23rd.
He is scheduled to arrive at his final destination, the Gyeongju Hwabaek Convention Center (HICO), on July 28 after passing through Damyang, Sunchang, Namwon, Haman, Geochang, Hapcheon, Goryeong, Daegu, Gyeongsan, and Yeongcheon.
He walks an average of 20 kilometers per day using only his left foot and promotes APEC along his route.
Arriving in Yeongcheon the previous day, Professor Lee met with Mayor Choi Kimoon in the city hall lobby, delivered promotional materials for the APEC Summit, and continued his journey toward Gyeongju, encouraged by the welcoming crowd.
In 1985, at the age of 22, Professor Lee lost both arms and his right leg in an electrical accident. Despite this, he never stopped challenging himself, entering university at the age of 47 and earning a doctoral degree, which led to his nickname, the "Left Foot Doctor."
He is currently serving as an adjunct professor in the Department of Youth Welfare Counseling at Yeungnam University College and continues to deliver messages of hope through lectures and media appearances.
Professor Lee stated, "I hope this APEC Summit becomes a symbol of integration beyond regional boundaries and serves as an opportunity for Korea to stand tall on the global stage." He added, "Thanks to the warm welcome and support from Yeongcheon City yesterday, I gained great strength."
