Hanyang University announced on July 25 that it has been selected as a core participant in the new mutual development program of Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer and has signed an industry-academia cooperation research contract.
This collaboration is part of a contract under which the Republic of Korea Air Force will acquire three C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft from Embraer.
Ha Sungkyu, Director of the Hanyang Composite Materials Innovation Research Center, who will lead the research, said, "This joint research focuses on improving composite material manufacturing processes and developing mass production technologies for thermoplastic composites," adding, "This will enhance the competitiveness of domestic composite material technology."
Embraer also stated that through this collaboration, it aims to share its technological expertise in the Korean market and pursue long-term partnerships with domestic universities and research institutes.
A Hanyang University official said, "We expect this industry-academia cooperation to mark the official starting point for aerospace technology collaboration between Korea and Brazil," adding, "Carbon fiber-based composite material technology, which is essential for aircraft structures, can be applied across the entire future mobility industry where lightweighting is crucial, including automobiles, drones, and urban air mobility (UAM)."
