PPP Fails to Reach Conclusion on Reform Plan at General Assembly... Yoon Heesook Says "Discussions Must Continue"

People Power Party: "Need for Further Deliberation on Reform Plan... Focus Should Be on Attacking the Ruling Party"

On July 23, the People Power Party held a general assembly to discuss the "Yoon Heesook Reform Plan," but failed to reach a conclusion. While Yoon Heesook, the chair of the Innovation Committee, maintains that discussions should continue, it is reported that the prevailing sentiment within the party is to focus on attacking the ruling party.

After the assembly, Yoon told reporters, "There were opinions that further deliberation is needed on the reform plan," adding, "We have decided to continue the discussions."

Yoon previously announced reform proposals including: specifying the party's past mistakes in the party constitution and regulations; changing the method for electing Supreme Council members; and strengthening the party member recall system. She also designated Song Eonseok, the interim leader and floor leader, as well as lawmakers Na Kyungwon, Yoon Sanghyun, and Jang Donghyuk as targets for renewal.

Yoon explained, "I appealed mainly for the first proposal?specifying the party's past mistakes in the constitution and regulations?because I believe there will never be another opportunity unless we sincerely apologize to the public," and clarified, "There was no discussion on personnel renewal."

She also expressed the view that another general assembly should be held soon to continue discussions on the reform plan. Yoon said, "It has been two weeks since the reform plan was announced, so I am personally quite disappointed that there are calls for further deliberation," adding, "I believe a decision should be made as soon as possible."

It is reported that, during the assembly, most opinions favored focusing on attacks against the ruling party. Chief spokesperson Park Sunghoon stated, "Without individual questions from lawmakers, Yoon simply outlined her reform plan and thoughts, and that concluded the meeting," adding, "There was a general consensus that the party's efforts should be concentrated on flood recovery and attacks against the ruling party."

Whether an additional general assembly will be held remains undecided. Park said, "There are many issues to point out, such as flood recovery and ministerial appointments that do not meet public expectations," and drew a line by saying, "It is up to the party leadership to decide."

The People Power Party also held a general assembly in the morning, but it ended after just one hour without a conclusion. The leadership explained that discussions on the reform plan fell through because Yoon did not attend, but Yoon countered that she did not attend because she was not notified to do so. In the afternoon, the assembly resumed with Yoon present, but no particular conclusion was reached.
