Fostering Community Consensus
and Expanding Interest and Participation
Sacheon City in South Gyeongsang Province has officially launched a pan-provincial signature campaign to promote the elevation of Sacheon Airport to international airport status and to foster it as an aerospace hub airport.
Mayor Dongsik Park of Sacheon City kicked off the campaign by holding a placard reading "Sacheon Airport, Gateway to Korea's Aerospace Industry" and filming a promotional campaign, thereby encouraging public interest and participation in the elevation of Sacheon Airport to international airport status.
This campaign is jointly promoted by Sacheon City and Jinju City under the supervision of South Gyeongsang Province, and is a pan-provincial signature campaign aimed at elevating Sacheon Airport to international airport status and fostering it as an aerospace hub airport.

Until September, the campaign will focus on building broad consensus throughout South Gyeongsang Province for the "Elevation of Sacheon Airport to International Airport Status" and expanding public interest and participation.
Sacheon City plans to expand the signature campaign atmosphere through joint campaigns with major organizations such as Sacheon City Council, Sacheon Police Station, Sacheon Fire Station, Sacheon Maritime Police Station, Sacheon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Korea Airports Corporation Sacheon Airport, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and Korea Aviation Engineering & Maintenance Service (KAEMS).
In August, the city, together with South Gyeongsang Province, Jinju City, and aerospace-related companies, will distribute leaflets and conduct on-site campaigns targeting airline passengers at the Sacheon Airport passenger terminal during Jeju route departure and arrival times, thereby strengthening nationwide publicity efforts.
The city plans to continue both online and offline signature campaigns until September, expanding citizen participation through various channels such as the city website, social media, and the airport site.
Meanwhile, Sacheon Airport was originally a Republic of Korea Air Force base that was the fourth to be taken over and used by the US military during the Korean War. It opened in May 1967 under the name Jinju Airport, becoming the only airport in South Gyeongsang Province to operate commercial flights. It has served as the aviation transportation hub not only for Jinju and Sacheon but also for residents of western South Gyeongsang Province and Southeast Asia. In July 1969, it was renamed Sacheon Airport.
Due to its regional characteristics, with the headquarters of Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), an aviation MRO cluster, and the Korea Aerospace Administration all concentrated in the area, Sacheon Airport is solidifying its status as a key hub airport for Korea's aerospace industry.
Mayor Dongsik Park stated, "The elevation of Sacheon Airport to international airport status is an important turning point not only for Sacheon but for the future growth of all of South Gyeongsang Province and the advancement of the aerospace industry. We will do our utmost to ensure the success of the pan-provincial signature campaign by uniting all local institutions and citizens."
