A Korean-American Girl Competes in a K-pop Girl Group Audition
First Major Hollywood Studio to Film Entirely on Location in Korea
Hive America announced on the 22nd (local time in the United States) that it will produce a film themed around K-pop in collaboration with the American film production company Paramount Pictures.
The film will tell the story of a Korean-American girl who, despite her family's opposition, participates in an audition TV program to become part of the next-generation K-pop girl group. The title of the film has not yet been decided.
The lead roles in the film will be played by actress Yoo Jiyoung and singer Eric Nam. Yoo Jiyoung previously voiced the character 'Joy,' the youngest member of the girl group 'Huntrix,' in the Netflix animated film "K-Pop: Demon Hunters." Eric Nam played the surgical resident 'Yona Yoon' in the Hollywood film "Transplant," which was released last year.
The film is scheduled to begin filming entirely on location in Korea around mid-September, with the goal of a theatrical release on February 12, 2027. Among major Hollywood studios, this will be the first time a film is shot entirely in Korea.
The film will be directed by Benson Lee, with the screenplay written by Eileen Shim. James Shin, President of Film and TV at Hive America, Arthur Spector and Joshua Davis of Epic Magazine, and Scooter Braun will also participate in the production. The executive producers are Joshua Bearman, John Zaozirny, and Scott Manson of Epic Magazine. Brian Oh, Executive Vice President of Paramount Pictures, will oversee the entire project on behalf of the production company.
Director Benson Lee stated, "This film is my love letter to K-pop, which has incredible energy, passion, magic, and a tremendous community that supports it. I sincerely thank Paramount Pictures for supporting this project, the production team for their unwavering dedication, and everyone who helped bring this story to life."
James Shin, President of Film and TV at Hive America, said, "We are very pleased to have this historic opportunity to present a story about K-pop to audiences around the world together with Paramount Pictures. This film will capture the dedication, artistry, and boundless popularity of K-pop, while also telling a universal story about pursuing one's dreams in the face of any adversity."
