Gangseo-gu Launches Resident Signature Campaign to Revive Gangbuk Transversal Line

Simultaneous Online and Offline Campaign Begins on the 28th
Conveying Residents' Aspirations to Seoul's Urban Rail Network Modification Plan

Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jin Kyohun), will launch a two-month resident signature campaign from July 28 to September 30 to push for the revival of the Gangbuk Transversal Line project. The campaign aims to convey the strong will of Gangseo-gu residents to relevant authorities regarding the resumption of the Gangbuk Transversal Line project, which was dropped from the Ministry of Economy and Finance's preliminary feasibility study in June last year.

The signature campaign will target Gangseo-gu residents and active members of the community, and will be conducted both online and offline. Anyone can easily participate by using the QR codes posted on the district's official website, social media platforms, and local community centers, or by signing during visits to nearby community centers or when meeting local leaders.

The district also plans to encourage participation from various professional organizations, committees, and local businesses to broaden the consensus among all residents.

The Gangbuk Transversal Line is a light rail line connecting Cheongnyangni Station (Line 1) in Dongdaemun-gu to Mokdong Station (Line 5) in Yangcheon-gu, spanning a total length of 25.72 kilometers and linking 19 stations.

The section passing through Gangseo-gu will include three stations: Deungchon Station, Sindeungchon (near Deungchon 2-dong Community Center), and Mokdong Sageori.

The areas of Hwagok-dong and Deungchon-dong are known for their low accessibility to urban rail, chronic congestion on main roads, inconvenience in crossing the Han River, and high transportation costs due to unnecessary detours when traveling to the city center.

Accordingly, the opening of the Gangbuk Transversal Line was expected to significantly improve transportation convenience for residents. However, the project was halted after failing the preliminary feasibility study in June due to insufficient economic viability. The district plans to submit the results of this resident signature campaign to Seoul City and other relevant authorities after September to actively advocate for the project's resumption.

Meanwhile, Seoul City is currently conducting a study for the "Second Urban Rail Network Modification Plan," which is reviewing ways to improve the business feasibility of lines, including the Gangbuk Transversal Line, that failed the preliminary feasibility study.

Jin Kyohun, Mayor of Gangseo-gu, stated, "The Gangbuk Transversal Line is a core project that will provide rail services to the under-served southwestern and eastern regions of Seoul and drive balanced regional development," adding, "We will strongly communicate the necessity of resuming the project based on the active participation of our residents."
