On the afternoon of July 22, President Lee Jaemyung held his first phone conversation since taking office with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar.
According to a written briefing by spokesperson Kang Yujeong, President Lee expressed his gratitude for Emir Tamim’s congratulatory message on his inauguration and highly praised the Emir’s efforts for Qatar’s prosperity and the advancement of Korea-Qatar relations.
The two leaders agreed to work together to further strengthen the close cooperative relationship between the two countries, taking the launch of the new Korean administration as an opportunity. They also shared the view that cooperation should be further enhanced not only in the fields of energy and infrastructure, where Korea and Qatar already maintain close ties, but also in a wide range of areas including investment, advanced industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), defense and the defense industry, as well as sports.
In particular, President Lee stated, "I hope that our companies can actively contribute to Qatar’s national development," and requested Emir Tamim’s interest and support.
Additionally, the two leaders welcomed the resumption of top-level exchanges between the two countries through this phone call, and, according to spokesperson Kang, agreed to meet in person at a mutually convenient time to explore ways to further advance bilateral relations.
