Man in His 60s Who Killed Son with Homemade Gun to Skip Detention Hearing Today

A pretrial detention hearing for a man in his 60s who killed his son with a homemade gun in Incheon will be held at the Incheon District Court on the afternoon of July 22, 2025.

Judge Yoo Aram, who is in charge of warrants at the Incheon District Court, is scheduled to conduct the warrant review for Mr. A (62), who is suspected of murder, violating the Act on the Safety Control of Firearms, Swords, and Explosives, and attempted arson of an inhabited building, at 2 p.m. on this day.

However, police reported that Mr. A has expressed his intention to refuse to attend the warrant review hearing and is expected to be absent. He did not disclose the reason for his non-attendance.

Previously, Mr. A was accused of killing his son, Mr. B (33), by firing a homemade gun at about 9:31 p.m. on July 20, 2025, in their apartment on the 33rd floor, the top floor, in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. After fleeing the scene, Mr. A was tracked down by police and arrested in Seoul at around 12:20 a.m. on July 21, 2025, and was then transferred to Incheon.

It has been determined that Mr. A used a pipe-shaped homemade gun to fire two rounds of 'shot' containing multiple metal pellets in succession. On the day of the crime, which was Mr. A's birthday, his son Mr. B had organized a celebration, and Mr. B, his wife, their two children, and an acquaintance were reportedly present together.

In addition, at Mr. A's residence in Ssangmun-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul, police discovered 15 containers of flammable materials, including PET bottles, detergent bottles, and milk cartons filled with thinner, as well as ignition devices. It was found that a timer had been set so that a fire would ignite at noon on July 21, 2025.

During police questioning, Mr. A stated, "I learned how to make firearms from YouTube, and I bought the ammunition 20 years ago and kept it in a storage room." Regarding the reason for killing his son, he said, "There were family conflicts," but has not provided a specific motive for the crime.
