Gwangju Donggu District announced on July 21 that it is mobilizing all available administrative resources to respond fully and restore the human and property damage caused by the recent record-breaking torrential rains in the area.
In Donggu, from July 17 to 19, Chosun University recorded 479.5 mm of rainfall, and Mudeungsan Mountain recorded 368.0 mm. As a result, 156 incidents of damage were reported, including 71 cases of building flooding, 30 cases of road flooding, 31 cases of manhole and stormwater pipe damage, 4 cases of road damage, and 20 other cases. Donggu dispatched 59 personnel, including public officials and related contractors, as well as 14 excavators and 10 dredging vehicles, to the affected sites and has completed restoration for 151 out of the 156 reported cases.
In addition, a total of 33 people from 27 households took shelter at the evacuee center set up in the Donggu Cultural Center, and all returned home on July 20.
District Mayor Lim Taek personally visited affected areas, including Dabok Village in Jisan-dong, Dansa Park in Jisan 2-dong, Chiljeon Village farm road, Dongsancheon embankment, and the access road to Yongyeon Village, starting from July 17 when the heavy rain began. He listened to residents' concerns, directly checked safety and damage conditions, and instructed officials to make every effort toward recovery.
All district employees were placed on emergency duty to minimize damage. Starting July 21, personnel from the 2nd Battalion of the 6753rd Unit will be deployed to two locations, including Suksil Village, to assist with the removal of household goods from flooded homes.
Mayor Lim stated, "We will do our utmost to help residents affected by the record rainfall return to their daily lives as soon as possible," adding, "We will also work on establishing fundamental measures to prevent such damage from occurring again in the future."
