The Army is focusing its efforts on recovery support in areas severely affected by heavy rainfall, including Gwangju, South Chungcheong, and South Gyeongsang, by deploying a cumulative total of 2,500 personnel.
According to the military on July 21, the Army has urgently deployed troops since July 17 to areas hit hardest by the heavy rains, including Gwangju Metropolitan City and the cities of Seosan and Yesan in South Chungcheong Province. By this day, a cumulative total of 2,500 personnel from the units directly under the 2nd Operations Command and local defense divisions have been mobilized for support.
On this day alone, around 270 soldiers from the 31st Infantry Division are being deployed to Gwangju; approximately 460 soldiers from units directly under the 2nd Operations Command and the 32nd Infantry Division to the South Chungcheong area; about 40 soldiers from the 35th Infantry Division to Sunchang in North Jeolla Province; and around 300 soldiers from the 39th Infantry Division to Hadong and Hapcheon in South Gyeongsang Province. In total, over 1,070 personnel and approximately 20 pieces of equipment are being deployed.
The Army is prioritizing the safety of deployed personnel while providing support for cleaning flooded homes, removing debris, and organizing supplies. Even in the aftermath of the heavy rain, with temperatures soaring above 30 degrees Celsius, soldiers are continuing recovery efforts by removing debris that has entered homes and shops in flooded areas and organizing household goods.
The Army stated, "To prevent safety accidents caused by the heat during civilian support operations, we are paying special attention to ensuring rest conditions for soldiers and providing safety equipment. We will continue to actively support recovery from heavy rain damage so that we can be a source of strength for citizens who have been affected by the disaster."
