Metropolitan Transport Commission Approves Basic Plan
for Songpa-Hanam Metropolitan Railway Extension
The Metropolitan Transport Commission of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that it will approve the basic plan for the Songpa-Hanam Line, an extension project of Seoul Subway Line 3, on July 22. This project involves constructing a new 11.7-kilometer line connecting Ogeum Station and Hanam City Hall Station, a transfer station for Line 5, passing through the new towns of Gam-il and Gyosan in Hanam.
The total project cost is expected to reach 1.8356 trillion won, with the goal of opening the line in 2032. Six stations will be built, including one in Bangi-dong and five in the Gam-il and Gyosan districts of Hanam. The same type of subway trains currently operating on Line 3 will be used on the new extension.
The government believes that the project will help alleviate traffic congestion in the Hanam area. Due to the characteristics of the residential districts, the line is expected to be crowded during commuting hours. Currently, it takes about 70 minutes by bus from Hanam Gyosan to Gangnam Express Bus Terminal, but after the new line opens, the same journey by rail is expected to take about 40 minutes.
Kim Soosang, head of the Metropolitan Transport Headquarters, stated, "Following the recent approval of the basic plans for the Goyang-Eunpyeong Line and the Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line, which are related to the third phase new towns, the approval of the Songpa-Hanam Line basic plan marks the full-scale implementation of metropolitan transportation infrastructure projects for these new towns. We will actively support the timely opening of the line and secure bus and road connection networks to reduce transportation inconvenience for new town residents."
