Dongdaemun District in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Philhyeong) is moving forward with a plan to change the name of Cheongnyangri-dong (both legal and administrative dong), currently in use, to "Cheongnyang-dong" in response to residents' opinions. To this end, the district will conduct a resident opinion survey targeting all households in Cheongnyangri-dong from July 21 to September 15.
This survey is being conducted in response to residents' ongoing requests to change the dong's name to the simpler and more symbolic "Cheongnyang-dong," reflecting the changes in the area due to the Cheongnyangri complex development.
The district believes that changing to the concise name "Cheongnyang-dong" will help enhance the area's brand value and external recognition. The current name, Cheongnyangri-dong, redundantly includes both "ri," a sub-administrative unit under eup/myeon, and "dong," which the district sees as an opportunity to correct unnecessary duplication in administrative district naming.
The opinion survey will be conducted both online and in person, with the principle of one response per household regardless of head of household status. The online survey can be accessed via the district's website or by scanning a QR code on promotional materials during the survey period, or by submitting a handwritten opinion form to the Cheongnyangri-dong Community Service Center. The in-person survey will be carried out by community leaders visiting households that did not participate in the online survey.
Dongdaemun District stated, "The name change will be decided carefully, giving top priority to residents' opinions," and added, "We ask for the active participation of all Cheongnyangri-dong residents."
