The current draft of the "Gyeonggi Northern Region Major Development 2040" includes 26 tasks and 360 projects, and an additional 188 proposals submitted by cities and counties are under review.

The meeting was presided over by Kim Dae-soon, the Second Vice Governor of Gyeonggi Province. Participants included Ryu Ho-guk, Deputy Governor of Yeoncheon County, directors and heads of departments from 10 cities and counties in northern Gyeonggi, Choi Bong-moon, President of the Korean Association of Land and Urban Planners, as well as experts from the Korean Society of Civil Engineers, the Korean Geographical Society, the Korea Construction Association, and the Gyeonggi Research Institute. In addition, Lee Kyung-hye, Vice Chair of the Planning and Finance Committee of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council, and Yoon Jong-young, Vice Chair of the Agricultural and Maritime Affairs Committee, attended as representatives of the Planning and Finance Committee and the Council of Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Members, respectively.

Nam Ji-hyun, Director of the Northern Development Research Office at the Gyeonggi Research Institute, stated, "The Gyeonggi Northern Region Major Development 2040 is a voluntary and survival-driven approach that cannot be established as a statutory plan. Its significance lies in being a plan created based on actual needs. Therefore, close cooperation between Gyeonggi Province and the cities and counties is essential."

Lee Jeong-hoon, Director of the Geography Research Institute at the Korean Geographical Society, said, "It appears that the core needs of northern Gyeonggi have been appropriately reflected, and there is evidence of efforts for the residents of the northern region. For NIMBY projects, it is preferable for the province and the cities and counties to negotiate individually rather than including them in the plan."

Yoon Jong-young, Vice Chair of the Agricultural and Maritime Affairs Committee of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council, stated, "It is necessary to ensure that the projects are included in individual statutory plans to guarantee their implementation, and it is essential to strengthen authority in terms of organization, personnel, and finance to promote the major development of northern Gyeonggi. Institutionalization is needed to ensure continuity into the ninth popularly elected administration. The council will spare no effort to secure the budget and will thoroughly review the progress of the projects."

Lee Kyung-hye, Vice Chair of the Planning and Finance Committee of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council, said, "We need to examine the fairness of the budget for the major development of northern Gyeonggi compared to southern Gyeonggi. Since it is impossible to excel in all projects, selection and concentration are required."

Kim Dae-soon, Second Vice Governor, stated, "In order to turn the vision for 2040 into tangible results, the province and the cities and counties must respond with a unified and all-out effort. We need to attract companies, and for companies, attracting talent is important, so we will thoroughly address residential conditions. To respond to future climate crises, we will further consider low-carbon and RE100 industrial complexes and strive to include these in the Gyeonggi Northern Region Major Development 2040."

Gyeonggi Province plans to incorporate the matters reviewed at this meeting into the major development project and, after further deliberation, make a final announcement around September this year.
