Governor Jung Chulwon of Damyang Conducts Emergency Inspection of Heavy Rain Damage Sites

Checking Resident Evacuations and Emergency Restoration Efforts

On the morning of July 18, Jung Chulwon, Governor of Damyang County in South Jeolla Province, visited sites affected by the heavy rainfall, inspecting the flooding situation and checking on resident evacuations and emergency restoration efforts.

Governor Jung closely examined drainage conditions and the progress of recovery efforts in major affected areas, including Bongsan-myeon, where river water levels had risen significantly due to the continuous heavy rain since the previous day, as well as Mujung-myeon, Goseo-myeon, and Daedeok-myeon, which experienced flooding in low-lying areas.

As of 12:00 p.m. on July 18, Damyang had recorded an average cumulative rainfall of 400.3mm. The prolonged heavy rain caused widespread damage throughout the county, including road flooding, damage to homes and commercial properties, crop flooding, and the displacement of water supply facilities.

In terms of private property damage, there were 57 cases of flooded homes, 6 cases of flooded commercial properties, 67 horticultural farms with 169 greenhouses affected, 11 livestock farms with 37 facilities impacted, and 13 other facilities reported as flooded. Additionally, 37,000 livestock perished at 3 farms, and crop flooding was reported in 460 cases, affecting a total of 291.9 hectares. Given the wide area affected by the flood, detailed investigations into public facilities, private properties, and livestock losses are ongoing, and the extent of the damage is expected to increase further.

The county has issued a Level 3 emergency response, operating a 24-hour response system. Residents living in landslide-prone areas and low-lying regions have evacuated to safe locations such as village halls and welfare centers. The county immediately distributed disaster relief kits and emergency aid packages, while also conducting on-site inspections and supporting recovery efforts.

Governor Jung stated, "All departments will work together to minimize flood damage and make every effort for emergency restoration," adding, "We will thoroughly prepare for additional rainfall by strengthening our response and recovery operations to prevent further damage."

Meanwhile, on the morning of July 18, Damyang County held a meeting in the Songgangjeong Room at the county office, bringing together all department heads and the heads of 12 towns and townships to review the heavy rain damage situation, share updates on the status of damage and restoration priorities by region, and discuss response plans based on future weather forecasts.
