Jeonnam Provincial Council Calls for Complete Reorganization of Yeosun Incident Committee

Demand for Resignation of Far-Right Committee Members for "Undermining Fairness" Through Official Statement

Jeonnam Provincial Council Calls for Complete Reorganization of Yeosun Incident Committee Jeollanamdo council members are issuing a statement urging the complete reorganization of the Yeosun Incident Committee. Provided by Jeonnam Provincial Council

On July 18, the Jeonnam Provincial Council called for the immediate resignation of certain far-right members of the Yeosu·Suncheon 10·19 Incident Truth-Finding and Victims’ Honor Restoration Committee (hereafter referred to as the Yeosun Incident Committee), as well as a complete reorganization of the committee.

In a statement released that day, the council emphasized, "The Yeosu·Suncheon 10·19 Incident (Yeosun Incident) is one of the most painful chapters in modern Korean history, where innocent civilians lost their lives. Uncovering the truth and restoring the honor of the victims is a national task that can no longer be delayed."

The statement continued, "The Yeosun Incident Committee, established to realize historical justice, must investigate historical facts based solely on truth and neutrality. Any political bias or ideological distortion must be thoroughly excluded."

The council pointed out that some individuals currently appointed to the committee are considered unfit to fulfill the committee’s essential mission and duties, given their past activities and political inclinations.

The council strongly criticized, "Oh Youngseop, appointed by the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, is a prominent New Right figure who has long studied and glorified the Syngman Rhee regime, lacking historical objectivity and balance. In addition, Lee Minwon, who participated as an author of the state-authored history textbook during the Park Geun-hye administration and defined the Yeosun Incident as a 'leftist rebellion,' is directly undermining the spirit and intent of the Yeosun Incident Special Act."

The council further pointed out, "During the victim screening process led by these committee members, there have been confirmed cases where numerous applications were rejected without clear reasons. Furthermore, a request for resignation by a central representative of the bereaved families, submitted in protest against the committee’s biased operations, has been left unaddressed for over a year."

The council added, "In order for the Yeosun Incident Committee to restore fairness and credibility, and to fully uncover the truth and restore the honor of victims and their families, those deemed unfit must resign immediately, and the government must completely reorganize the committee with objective and neutral members."
