Kim Beomsu, founder of Kakao and head of the Future Initiative Center, who has been battling cancer, recently underwent another surgery following a recurrence of his illness.
According to the IT industry on July 18, Kim underwent a second surgery after confirming the recurrence of cancer during his treatment process. He is currently focusing on recovery and treatment after the surgery.
The recurrence was discovered during recent treatment, and Kim has been repeatedly admitted to and discharged from the hospital. A Kakao representative stated, "Kim recently underwent another surgery," adding, "He is not in critical condition at all, but he does require rest and intensive treatment."
Previously, in March, Kim stepped down from his role as co-chairman of the CA Council, Kakao Group's highest decision-making body, to focus on cancer treatment. Since then, he has only served as head of the Future Initiative Center. The CA Council of Kakao Group has since transitioned to a sole chairmanship under Kakao CEO Chung Shinah.
Since last year, Kim has been on trial in connection with the acquisition of SM Entertainment, and he has alternated between attending and missing the first trial sessions.
Earlier, on this day, Special Prosecutor Min Jungki announced plans to question Ryu Geungseon, CEO of Kakao Mobility, on July 21 in connection with Kim's appearance related to the so-called "Butler Gate" case. Deputy Special Prosecutor Oh Junghui stated during a regular briefing, "Taking various circumstances into account regarding Kakao, we plan to summon and question CEO Ryu of Kakao Mobility at 10 a.m. next Monday (the 21st)."
