Hyundai President Jose Munoz Emphasizes Apollo 'Moonshot': "Let's Challenge the Impossible"

Jose Munoz, President of Hyundai Motor Company, emphasized the "moonshot" spirit on July 18, marking the 56th anniversary of the first manned spacecraft Apollo 11's landing on the moon. The term "moonshot" originally referred to the launch of lunar exploration vehicles, but its meaning has expanded to signify innovative challenges that break conventional boundaries or attempts to achieve seemingly impossible goals.

On the previous day, Munoz wrote on his social networking service (SNS) LinkedIn, "The moment Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, was not just a victory for the United States, but a triumph of human creativity, collaboration, and determination to challenge the impossible." He added, "The spirit that sent humanity to the moon now drives Hyundai Motor Company's vision of 'Progress for Humanity.'"

He also referred to the moonshot spirit of the Apollo 11 project. Munoz stated, "Another lesson the moon landing left us is that the greatest achievements begin with thinking beyond what is possible today," and emphasized, "We need this kind of moonshot thinking as we face the challenges ahead." He continued, "The vision of providing safe, sustainable, economical, and convenient mobility for everyone may sound ambitious, but Apollo 11 proved to us that humanity can accomplish wonders when we work together." Hyundai Motor Company aims to transform the paradigm of transportation through achieving carbon neutrality by 2045, developing hydrogen fuel cell technology, and innovating mobility for all.

Munoz cited the perfect teamwork among members from diverse backgrounds?such as engineers, technicians, and controllers?as the foundation for the success of the Apollo 11 project, noting, "This is similar to the way Hyundai Motor Company works." He added, "From the Metapros (operators) producing vehicles at the Georgia plant (HMGMA) in the United States, to the engineers developing next-generation batteries in Korea, to dealers meeting customers worldwide and partner companies co-developing autonomous driving technology, we can achieve true results when we combine each area of expertise and move toward a common goal."
