Due to a sharp rise in the water level of the Yeongsan River caused by heavy rain, Muan County and Yeongam County in Jeollanam-do have initiated emergency response measures.
On the morning of July 18, Yeongam County issued an emergency disaster text message, stating that "the water level at the Yeongsan River estuary bank has reached a dangerous level," and urged residents in nearby low-lying areas to evacuate quickly.
Muan County also recommended immediate evacuation for residents of Illo-eup and Samhyang-eup, as the water level of Namchangcheon has risen rapidly, increasing the likelihood of the Yeongsan River overflowing. In addition, vehicle owners near parking lots and bicycle paths were asked to move their vehicles to safe areas.
As of 8:00 a.m. on July 18, the water level at Namchang 5 Bridge on Namchangcheon had reached 6.45 meters, exceeding the planned flood level, and the water level at the Yeongsan River estuary, which spans Mokpo, Muan, and Yeongam, was also at 1.99 meters, surpassing the danger threshold.
Currently, flood warnings have been issued for eight locations in the Gwangju and Jeollanam-do regions, and flood advisories are in effect for six locations.
