Lee Junghun, a planning member of the Economic Subcommittee 2 of the National Policy Planning Committee, stated in his opening remarks at a meeting with victims of jeonse fraud held at the committee on the morning of the same day, "The government enacted a special law to alleviate the suffering of jeonse fraud victims, but there are still many people who have not yet recovered from their losses and continue to live in difficult circumstances." He added, "The National Policy Planning Committee, the government, and the ruling party will all actively cooperate to ensure the prompt recovery of these victims."
Yeom Taeyoung, a lawmaker who serves as the secretary of the Democratic Party's Special Committee on Jeonse Fraud, attended the meeting and said, "The jeonse fraud issue is a social disaster. It should not be dismissed as a matter between individuals." He continued, "Already, more than 10 victims have lost their lives. There should never be a situation where innocent citizens are driven to the brink."
Representative Yeom emphasized, "We are holding this meeting to address the issue with a field-oriented and victim-centered approach," and added, "We must discover practical alternatives that victims can truly feel and prepare measures that prioritize their perspectives above all else."
President Lee Jaemyung, during his presidential campaign, pledged to expand relief for victims of jeonse fraud and strengthen punishments for perpetrators as part of his promises to young people.
Accordingly, the National Policy Planning Committee, led by Park Honggeun, head of the National Policy Planning Subcommittee, is known to have held several meetings on jeonse fraud. It is reported that these meetings have focused on the need for relief for victims, such as measures for the prompt repayment of small deposit tenants, as well as ways to address blind spots in jeonse fraud cases.
Cho Seungrae, spokesperson for the National Policy Planning Committee, said at a regular briefing on the 16th, "Based on the contents of the meeting with victims, we will hold discussions to finalize the designation of this issue as a priority task for swift implementation."
