Korea Forest Service to Launch Full-Scale 'REDD+' Project in Latin America for National Greenhouse Gas Reduction

The Korea Forest Service is set to launch a full-scale project in Latin America aimed at preventing deforestation in developing countries as part of efforts to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative is known as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus (REDD+).

On the 18th, the Korea Forest Service announced that it will conduct the main feasibility study for REDD+ in Honduras.

Honduras is a country located in Central America. The Korea Forest Service plans to implement the REDD+ project there to contribute to achieving Korea’s 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for greenhouse gas reduction.

REDD+ refers to activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by preventing deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. The greenhouse gas reduction results achieved through REDD+ can be transferred between countries, allowing donor countries to use these reductions toward their own NDC targets. As a result, the carbon reduction outcomes in Honduras can be reflected in Korea’s national greenhouse gas reduction goals.

The main feasibility study will assess the feasibility and limitations of implementing REDD+ in Honduras. The purpose of the study is to examine the current state of deforestation and forest degradation, estimate potential greenhouse gas reductions if the project is implemented, and evaluate other relevant project conditions.

The Korea Forest Service aims to carry out a national-level REDD+ cooperation project from next year through 2030, targeting 6.3 million hectares of forest in Honduras. The goal is to contribute to achieving 5 million tons of international greenhouse gas reductions in the forestry sector.

Prior to the main feasibility study, the Korea Forest Service held discussions with the head of the Honduras Forest Service and officials from local government agencies related to climate change. The discussions focused on Korea’s REDD+ implementation plans and the potential transfer of international greenhouse gas reduction results based on future project outcomes.

Nam Songhee, Director General for International Forestry Cooperation at the Korea Forest Service, stated, “Forests are the most effective asset in responding to the climate crisis and are an area of focus for the international community. The Korea Forest Service will continue to identify and expand REDD+ partner countries in regions such as Latin America and Africa, contributing to the achievement of the international greenhouse gas reduction target of 5 million tons in the forestry sector.”
