Yeoju City to Establish First Semiconductor Materials and Components Cluster in the Capital Region's Natural Conservation Area
Project Passes Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Review
Completion Targeted for 2027 with 1,300 New Jobs Expected
The 'Ganam Semiconductor General Industrial Complex (Yeoju Ganam General Industrial Complex Cluster)' development project, which is being promoted by Yeoju City in Gyeonggi Province, has entered full swing.
Yeoju City announced on July 17 that, following the conditional approval by the Capital Region Maintenance Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on June 27, it officially received the final review results from the ministry on July 16. This development plan is being highly regarded for its symbolic significance, as it is the first large-scale industrial complex within the Capital Region's Natural Conservation Area to pass such a review.
This project is one of the key campaign pledges of Yeoju Mayor Lee Choongwoo and serves as a core initiative reflecting the philosophy of the eighth popularly elected administration. With the approval, the development of the industrial complex is expected to accelerate, and the fulfillment of Mayor Lee's pledges is becoming increasingly visible.
Mayor Lee Choongwoo stated, "The Ganam Semiconductor Industrial Complex project will play a pivotal role in Yeoju City's vision of becoming a 'vibrant economic city' and a 'business-friendly city.' We will push forward with a sense of urgency to complete the development by our target year of 2027."
Over the past 20 years, despite various regulations, Yeoju City has developed four industrial complexes and attracted businesses. However, the supply of industrial land has not met demand, making it difficult to attract more companies. In particular, 92% of manufacturing companies have been scattered in the form of individual factories rather than planned sites, leading to ongoing issues such as environmental pollution and increased management costs.
In response, Yeoju City has worked closely with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Gyeonggi Province, to convert individual sites into planned sites, resulting in the recent success of passing the Capital Region Maintenance Committee's review.
The cluster to be developed this time will cover 271,663 square meters (approximately 82,000 pyeong) and will focus on attracting companies specializing in semiconductor materials, components, and equipment.
Through this initiative, Yeoju City expects not only to create around 1,300 direct jobs, but also to generate a chain of economic ripple effects, including population inflow, increased consumption, and higher demand for education in the region.
Furthermore, the city aims to minimize concerns about environmental pollution through systematic management of the complex and to establish itself as a model case for building a sustainable industrial ecosystem.
Currently, the only remaining step for the Ganam Semiconductor Industrial Complex project is the review of the Gyeonggi Province Local Industrial Complex Plan. If all goes as planned, compensation procedures and groundbreaking could take place within this year. Yeoju City expects the full development of the industrial complex to be completed by 2027.
Mayor Lee Choongwoo added, "We will continue to systematically and strategically develop market-responsive, customized industrial complexes that can flexibly adapt to the rapidly changing industrial market."
