Advancing Smart Logistics at Busan New Port
Control System and Auxiliary Equipment Also to Be Supplied
On July 17, Hyundai Rotem announced that it has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from Dongwon Global Terminal Busan (DGT) for the supply of 57 Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) to be delivered to Pier 7 at Busan New Port.
This order follows the previous supply of 43 AGVs in 2023, and represents a subsequent batch. After the main contract is signed, Hyundai Rotem plans to deliver not only the 57 AGVs but also related equipment such as the control system and chargers. AGVs are unmanned vehicles that automatically transport containers within ports and are a core component of smart port logistics systems. Last year, Hyundai Rotem also supplied 44 AGVs to the automated terminal at Gwangyang Port, continuing its success in the domestic port logistics automation market for three consecutive years.
Busan New Port has been designated by the government as a strategic port and a central hub for the development of the Arctic Sea Route. Recently, the construction of smart logistics infrastructure incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and big data has been actively underway. Through this AGV supply, Hyundai Rotem is expected to contribute to the advancement of logistics at Busan New Port and to its emergence as a global smart port hub.
Hyundai Rotem is strengthening its after-sales support capabilities, including improving AGV performance and upgrading the control system, to enhance DGT's cargo handling efficiency. The company is also focusing on research and development (R&D) to increase the hourly container handling capacity of AGVs. In particular, by increasing the localization rate of AGV bodies and core components, Hyundai Rotem aims to improve maintenance response speed and enhance the competitiveness of the port logistics industry. Leveraging the advantages of domestic manufacturing, the company also plans to contribute to the establishment of a port parts supply ecosystem and the activation of the smart logistics industry.
A Hyundai Rotem representative stated, "We will provide high-quality AGVs through customer-tailored services and reliable supply," adding, "We will continue research and development to strengthen domestic port AGV technological capabilities."
