Improving Energy Performance and Indoor Air Quality
Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Gijae) is set to actively pursue a 'Green Remodeling' project at the Gu-rip Haebaragi Daycare Center to address the climate crisis and improve the childcare environment for infants and young children.
The 'Green Remodeling Project' is a public contest initiative led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, aimed at improving the energy performance of public buildings that are over 10 years old and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Yangcheon-gu was selected for the project last year and secured a total budget of 900 million won.
This project is the most heavily funded among all green remodeling projects in Seoul's autonomous districts, serving as a prime example of Yangcheon-gu's commitment to advancing eco-friendly childcare administration. The project will commence this month and is scheduled for completion in March of next year.
The target of the project, Gu-rip Haebaragi Daycare Center (33 Mokdongdong-ro 1-gil, Yangcheon-gu), is a public building completed in 2012, with one basement floor and two above-ground floors (total floor area of 784.9 square meters). As more than 10 years have passed since its completion, issues such as insufficient insulation and inefficient heating and cooling have led to ongoing problems with energy waste and poor indoor environmental conditions.
Accordingly, the green remodeling project will involve structural and mechanical improvements throughout the facility, including reinforcement of wall and roof insulation, upgrades to floor heating, replacement of windows and entrance doors, installation of heat recovery ventilation systems, installation of high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and replacement of boilers.
In particular, the installation of a ventilation system effective in reducing fine dust and carbon dioxide, along with the replacement of heating and cooling units to minimize energy consumption, is expected to directly improve indoor air quality. Additionally, the use of eco-friendly finishing materials certified with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) will help minimize children's exposure to hazardous substances in their living spaces.
Since 2020, Yangcheon-gu has been actively implementing green remodeling projects at public daycare centers, having completed projects at nine locations, including Dasom Daycare Center.
Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, stated, "The green remodeling of public childcare facilities is not merely a facility upgrade, but an investment in the health and future of our children," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to create an eco-friendly childcare environment and realize a green city where children and parents can be happy together."
