Rain began to fall overnight in Gwangju and Jeonnam, and heavy rainfall exceeding 300mm is forecasted in these regions until the 19th.
According to the Gwangju Meteorological Administration on July 17, between midnight and 5 a.m. on this day, Gwangju and Jeonnam received 10 to 20mm of rain. Some areas did not record any precipitation due to the narrow formation of rain clouds, but rainfall is expected to expand to all areas during the morning.
The Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that Gwangju and Jeonnam will receive 20 to 80mm of rain throughout the day, while the northern west coast of Jeonnam could see more than 100mm. Starting the next day, rainfall is expected to increase further over two days. The expected precipitation is 100 to 200mm for Gwangju and Jeonnam, with some areas such as the southern coast of Jeonnam and the vicinity of Jirisan possibly experiencing more than 300mm of heavy rain.
Between the early morning of the 18th and the morning of the 19th, intense rainfall of 50 to 80mm per hour is expected. Because the rain will be both heavy and concentrated in narrow areas, there will likely be significant differences in rainfall intensity and total accumulated precipitation by region. Some areas may experience temporary lulls in rainfall.
An official from the Gwangju Meteorological Administration stated, "There may be gusty winds, thunder, and lightning in areas where it is raining," and urged, "Please take special care to prevent any damage from the rain."
