Temporary Park to Be Created Around Sampung Shopping Center
Construction Aimed to Begin in First Half of 2026
Phase 1: Temporary Park with Lawn and Amenities
Gradual Park Development Planned for Each Shopping District
The Sewoon Shopping District park project is set to enter full-scale implementation after 16 years. Seoul City announced that, once the final administrative procedure for Phase 1?the public notice of the implementation plan?is completed, construction will begin in the first half of next year.
On July 17, the city stated that it had issued the public notice for the implementation plan of the 'Sewoon District Urban Park (Phase 1) Development Project.' This public notice marks the last administrative step to transform approximately 5,670 square meters around the Sampung Shopping Center, part of the Sewoon Shopping District, into a park. After the compensation process, construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026.
This project is a key component of the 'Green Ecological Urban Core Re-creation Strategy' announced in April 2022. The goal is to gradually demolish the Sewoon Shopping District and create a large-scale urban park of about 50,000 square meters in its place, forming a green corridor connecting Bugaksan, Jongmyo, and Namsan. In June last year, the city also decided to revise the 'Sewoon Redevelopment Promotion Plan' to secure approximately 136,000 square meters of green space within the Sewoon District in phases, reflecting the Green Ecological Urban Core Re-creation Strategy.
The target area for Phase 1 is the vicinity of the Sampung Shopping Center, near the Euljiro business district. The city will first create a temporary park featuring a lawn, gardens, benches, and other amenities. The Phase 2 site, PJ Hotel, is undergoing integrated redevelopment together with the nearby 6-1-3 district. In conjunction with the integrated redevelopment of PJ Hotel and the 6-1-3 district, a park will be established above ground, while a dedicated musical theater with 1,500 seats will be built underground. Once the park development extends to the PJ Hotel site, the city plans to integrate these project areas into a complete, large-scale urban park.
The city believes that the park development around the Sampung Shopping Center, promoted through this public notice, will serve as a crucial catalyst for establishing the north-south green corridor, and plans to gradually expand park development to the remaining shopping districts as well.
Cho Namjun, head of the Urban Space Headquarters at Seoul City, stated, "The park development in the Sewoon District is a historic project that will elevate the competitiveness of central Seoul," and added, "We will do our utmost to create a landmark park that citizens can take pride in."
