On July 16, the Sejong Fire Headquarters announced that it will conduct intensive patrols of 54 aging apartment complexes in the region this month to prevent heat-related illnesses and fire accidents caused by summer heat waves and increased electricity usage.
The joint patrols, carried out by the Geumhwa Patrol Team and the 119 Safety Center, are designed to inspect the safety of apartment complexes that are vulnerable to extreme heat and to strengthen response systems for various disasters, including fires. The Geumhwa Patrol Team will conduct on-site safety inspections and data collection, provide fire prevention education for residents, and proactively identify and improve risk factors within apartment complexes.
In particular, considering the sharp increase in electricity usage during the summer, the patrols will focus on inspecting potential electrical fire hazards such as distribution panels, electric vehicle charging stations, and indoor wiring. The 119 Safety Center will expand patrols using pump trucks from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., when electricity consumption is highest, and will enhance mobility to ensure a rapid initial response in the event of a fire or other emergencies.
The preventive patrols, which will continue until the end of next month, will be followed by additional measures for complexes that require further improvements, in cooperation with relevant agencies based on the inspection results.
An official from the Fire Headquarters stated, "Aging apartment complexes are often structurally and environmentally vulnerable to disasters," and added, "We will strengthen field-oriented patrol activities and raise public awareness of safety in order to prevent accidents caused by heat waves and electrical overload in advance."
