Completion of Submarine Cable Building 5
HVDC Production Capacity Expanded Fourfold
LS Cable has secured Asia's largest-scale high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable production facility.
LS Cable announced on July 16 that it has completed Building 5 within its submarine cable factory in Donghae, Gangwon Province, and has increased its HVDC submarine cable production capacity by more than four times compared to before. With this expansion, the company now possesses one of Asia's largest HVDC cable production facilities and has significantly strengthened its competitiveness in securing large-scale global projects.

This development is expected to serve as a turning point for LS Cable, as its affiliate LS Marine Solution recently decided to invest in building a new cable-laying vessel dedicated to HVDC projects. Together, these moves will enable the company to establish full turnkey capabilities, covering everything from production to installation.
According to LS Cable, a vertical continuous vulcanization (VCV) line has been added to Building 5 of the submarine cable factory. The company explained that this has greatly enhanced both the production competitiveness and supply stability of its submarine cables. The VCV system is essential for manufacturing long-distance, high-voltage cables spanning hundreds of kilometers, as it determines the insulation quality and electrical stability of the cables.
The HVDC cable market is growing rapidly due to the expansion of offshore wind power and increasing demand for long-distance power transmission. However, because the technology is highly complex and requires large-scale infrastructure, only a few companies worldwide?including LS Cable, as well as some in Europe and Japan?are capable of supplying these products. In particular, for long-distance HVDC installation, a dedicated cable-laying vessel of at least 10,000 tons is essential, so companies must possess both production and installation capabilities to meet global demand.
An LS Cable official stated, "The global HVDC cable market is expected to grow to about 40 trillion won by 2030," adding, "We will actively pursue participation in the West Coast HVDC Energy Expressway project together with LS Marine Solution."
