Netflix's "Squid Game" Season 2 has failed to secure a nomination at the Emmy Awards in the United States.

"Squid Game" Season 2 Fails to Secure Emmy Nomination in the US

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the United States announced the nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on July 15 (local time). "Squid Game" did not make the list in major categories such as Outstanding Drama Series. It was outpaced by Disney's Star Wars series "Andor," Netflix's "The Diplomat," HBO Max's "The Last of Us," "The Pit," and "The White Lotus," Hulu's "Paradise," and Apple TV+'s "Severance" and "Slow Horses."

In 2022, with Season 1, "Squid Game" set a record for the most nominations received by a non-English-language drama, being nominated in fourteen categories including Outstanding Drama Series, Directing, Writing, and Lead Actor. At the awards ceremony, it won in six categories: Directing (Hwang Donghyuk), Lead Actor (Lee Jungjae), Guest Actor (Lee Yoomi), Visual Effects, Stunt Performance, and Production Design.

Local media outlets such as Gold Derby cited a lack of narrative completeness as the reason for its absence from this year's nominations. They analyzed that Season 2 and Season 3 essentially form a single story that could be called "Part 2," but the narrative was interrupted in the middle, resulting in lower evaluations.

However, they noted that since Season 3 will be eligible for submission at next year's awards, there is still hope for future recognition. This year's Emmy Awards consider works released between June 1 of last year and May 31 of this year. "Squid Game" Season 2 was released in December of last year, and Season 3 was released in June of this year.
