Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center has completed the implementation of a reusable container system at funeral halls in all six of its affiliated hospitals, with Suwon Hospital being the last to adopt the system.
On July 16, Gyeonggi Province announced that it has established a system for using reusable containers at the funeral halls of its six hospitals under the Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Center (Suwon, Icheon, Anseong, Uijeongbu, Pocheon, and Paju) and will begin efforts to reduce the use of single-use products.
Earlier that day, Suwon Hospital announced the launch of the "Reusable Container Rental and Cleaning Service Support Project for Funeral Halls."
The Reusable Container Rental and Cleaning Service Support Project allows bereaved families to request the use of reusable containers, and some funeral halls have designated exclusive reception rooms for reusable containers. After use, specialized companies handle the collection and cleaning of the containers to ensure hygiene.
Gyeonggi Province provided 627 million KRW in provincial funding to establish the reusable container supply system.
Previously, in 2022, Gyeonggi Province implemented a reusable container support project at the Suwon Yeonhwajang Funeral Hall and the Hwaseong Hambaeksan Memorial Park Funeral Hall.
Gyeonggi Province is considering a phased expansion of the system to the private sector, taking into account the conditions of each city and county and the operating environment of funeral halls.
Lee Yongyun, Director of the Resource Circulation Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "This project aims to replace approximately two million single-use products per year with reusable containers, and we expect it to reduce waste and lower disposal costs. Based on the high satisfaction of users who have used reusable containers, we will gradually expand the project."
