Achievements in AI-Based Urban Innovation and a Future-Oriented Intelligent City Model
Ulsan City will participate in the 2025 World Smart City Expo (WSCE 2025), which will be held at BEXCO in Busan from July 15 to July 17, and will operate the "Ulsan Exhibition Hall."
The WSCE is the largest smart city exhibition event in Asia, co-hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Science and ICT. Since 2017, it has been held annually as an international event where cities from around the world share their technologies and policies.
This year, under the theme "Next City For All," the expo will feature exhibitions of smart city services based on advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. In addition, there will be business consultations for companies and a variety of programs including conferences with experts from industry, academia, research, and government.
At this year's expo, Ulsan City will present its "New Ulsan 4.0 Smart City for the Leap into the Fourth Industrial Revolution," showcasing Ulsan-style smart city services organized into four zones: "Mobility," "Energy," "Life," and "Data."
The main exhibition contents are as follows.
△Mobility: Autonomous vehicles (mobility), demand-responsive transport (mobility, DRT) for transportation-vulnerable groups, and the Ulsan Smart Mobility Pass (MaaS)
△Energy: Renewable energy measurement system, energy measurement systems for homes and businesses, and a carbon-neutral reward system
△Life: Direct delivery-based resource recycling system, road hazard detection solution, experiential smart healthcare, and smart transportation facilities
△Data: Smart service operation platform, AI-based traffic data platform, and Data Convergence Innovation Center
The details of each service will be presented through video content to effectively communicate policy directions and core strategies. In addition, interactive content such as an AI photo zone and a roulette event will be offered for visitors.
Furthermore, Ulsan City is scheduled to receive the Excellent City Award at the "2025 WSCE Awards Ceremony" to be held on July 16.
This marks the second consecutive year that Ulsan has received this award, demonstrating the continuity and innovation of Ulsan’s smart city policies to the world.
The WSCE Awards Ceremony is an official program that selects and honors 35 outstanding cases in eight categories, including domestic cities, international cities, AI & data, mobility, buildings & infrastructure, safety & healthcare, and energy & environment, targeting local governments and companies from Korea and abroad.
Ulsan City submitted its achievements under the theme "Ulsan Mipo Smart Green Industrial Complex Integrated Control Center," highlighting the establishment of a smart safety management system based on digital twins and AI. The city received high marks for leading the digital transformation of national industrial complexes, strengthening industrial site safety, and improving working environments.
On July 17, Ulsan City will also be selected as an outstanding local government in the "Smart City Excellent Enterprise Awards Ceremony," co-hosted by the Korea Journalists Association and the National Assembly Digital Economy 3.0 Forum, and will receive a joint certificate from the organizing institutions.
A city official stated, "This expo has served as an opportunity to demonstrate Ulsan’s smart city competitiveness to the world," adding, "We will continue to expand AI and data-based technologies throughout the city to proactively address regional issues and further strengthen the foundation for establishing Ulsan as the capital of artificial intelligence."
