Introduced at Yeongwol and Samgok Plants
Production Workers to Maintain Existing Shifts
Following Hanjil Cement, its affiliate Hanjil Hyundai Cement will also implement a biweekly four-day workweek. This decision comes after Hanjil Cement became the first in the industry to introduce the biweekly four-day workweek in April last year, resulting in increased employee satisfaction and improved work efficiency.
On July 15, Hanjil Hyundai Cement announced that starting in August, it will introduce the biweekly four-day workweek at its cement production plants in Yeongwol and Samgok. Under this system, employees will work one extra hour per day for eight out of ten workdays over two weeks, and take every other Friday off. However, production workers will continue with the existing shift work schedule.
Since the beginning of this year, Hanjil Hyundai Cement has gathered feedback from employees through a pilot period of the biweekly four-day workweek. As a result, both employee satisfaction and work efficiency were evaluated positively, leading to the official adoption of the system.
Hanjil Cement, which previously implemented the biweekly four-day workweek, has observed improvements in employee welfare. The work environment for employees with young children has improved, and job satisfaction among new hires who value accessibility to major cities has also increased.
According to the '2024 Sustainability Management Report' recently published by Hanjil Holdings, 88% of employees expressed a positive preference for the biweekly four-day workweek, while 12% expressed a negative preference. The positive effects of the biweekly four-day workweek were cited in the following order: 'improvement in work-life balance' (63 employees), 'increase in personal time' (48 employees), 'improvement in work concentration' (29 employees), and 'enhancement of job competency' (19 employees).
A human resources representative at Hanjil Cement stated, "The biweekly four-day workweek has also led to an increase in job applications, with more than twice as many applicants for new hires earlier this year compared to the previous year," adding, "As this is an unusual case in the manufacturing industry, even government officials have made inquiries."
