Kia Introduces Renewable Energy via First PPA at Autoland Hwaseong Among Domestic Sites

61 GWh of Renewable Energy to Be Introduced
at Three Domestic Autoland Sites in the Second Half of the Year

On July 15, Kia announced that it has introduced renewable energy power at Autoland Hwaseong, making it the first among its domestic business sites to do so through a renewable energy purchase agreement (PPA) with Korea South-East Power.

A renewable energy PPA is a method by which a company purchases and uses renewable energy at a fixed price for a certain period, offering the advantage of stable long-term electricity procurement. Kia will receive approximately 1,215 MWh of renewable energy power annually produced by Korea South-East Power. This amount is enough to fully charge the EV4 Standard model, which is equipped with a 58.3 kWh battery, more than 20,000 times.

To address climate change and achieve carbon neutrality, Kia is working to expand the use of renewable energy and build self-generation power facilities at its domestic and overseas business sites, aiming to achieve 'RE100 (100% renewable energy)' by 2040. In the second half of the year, Kia plans to further expand renewable energy power supply through PPA at three domestic Autoland sites, increasing the total annual supply to approximately 61 GWh.

In addition, Kia plans to procure power through PPA not only at its domestic and Chinese business sites, which are already supplied with renewable energy power through PPA, but also at its business sites in the United States and India in the future.

Within this year, Kia will install a combined 38 MW of solar power self-generation facilities at its business sites in Korea, the United States, India, Mexico, and Slovakia, enabling solar power generation at all production bases. By 2027, the company plans to expand the total facility capacity to 62 MW.

Lee Deokhyun, Executive Vice President and Head of Sustainability Management at Kia, stated, "The transition to renewable energy is an essential task in responding to the global climate crisis," and added, "To sincerely practice carbon neutrality, we will continue to expand self-generation facilities at our business sites and promote the supply of new renewable energy through PPA."
