The Criminal Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency announced on July 15 that it held a meeting of the Task Force (TF) for Countermeasures Against Mass Victimization Fraud.
According to the police, from March last year to June this year, a total of 63,272 people were apprehended in connection with the top 10 types of malicious fraud, including voice phishing and investment reading chat rooms, and 4,993 of them were taken into custody. In particular, last year, the police promoted the activation of consolidated investigations, operated a malicious fraud tracking team, and carried out a concentrated apprehension period for wanted suspects. As a result, the arrest rate increased by 3.3 percentage points compared to the previous year.
At this meeting, several topics were discussed: the formation of dedicated investigation teams for mass victimization fraud and the implementation of special crackdowns; strengthening of prevention systems through the analysis and blocking of criminal methods and the expansion of the integrated reporting and response center; the realization of practical international cooperation and collaboration; and the enactment of a Mass Victimization Fraud Prevention Act (tentative name).
Park Sungju, Commissioner General of the Criminal Investigation Headquarters, stated, "Mass victimization fraud is a serious social threat that undermines not only economic security but also the trust within our community. The police will mobilize all available resources to deliver outcomes that the public can truly feel."
