Sanitation Worker's Pay Statement Draws Attention
Net Pay After Taxes and Social Insurance Deductions Reaches 5.4 Million Won
The actual pay statement of a sanitation worker has been made public, drawing significant attention. The net amount received, after deductions for taxes and the four major social insurances, reaches as much as 5.4 million won, prompting reactions such as, "It's on par with major corporations."
On July 12, a post titled "11th Year Janitor's Pay Statement" began spreading online and became a hot topic.
The statement details the June salary for Mr. A, a sanitation worker with 11 years of experience. According to the statement, Mr. A's total monthly pay was 6,529,930 won. The breakdown includes a base salary of 2,507,970 won, family allowance of 160,000 won, year-end bonus of 1,303,980 won, driving allowance of 300,000 won, and pollution allowance of 100,000 won.
In addition, overtime and holiday work allowances were added. Mr. A worked two days on holidays, 92 hours of night shifts, and 19 hours of extra time, earning an additional 2,125,980 won in allowances. After deducting income tax, national pension, health insurance, and other items from the total payment, the net amount received was 5,427,290 won.
Most online commenters responded by saying, "You get paid according to the work you do." Although it was once an unpopular occupation, stable pay, welfare benefits, and guaranteed retirement age have recently drawn attention, leading to increased competition for these positions. In fact, in May, Geumsan County in South Chungcheong Province held an open recruitment for sanitation workers, attracting 23 applicants for a single position, resulting in a competition ratio of 23 to 1. In April, Jeju City held an open recruitment for government employees, and the sanitation worker category saw 307 applicants for 15 positions, a competition ratio of 20.5 to 1.
As of 2022, the starting annual salary for sanitation workers varies by region, but in Seoul, it is known to be between 50 million and 55 million won (before tax); in the six major metropolitan cities, between 40 million and 45 million won; and in small and medium-sized cities, between 32 million and 35 million won. These figures include various allowances such as hazard pay, incentive allowances, military service credits, and family allowances. The exact salary level may vary depending on the local government and working conditions.
