Daejeon Mayor Lee Jangwoo Visits LG Energy Solution Technology Research Institute
Lee Jangwoo, mayor of Daejeon, is visiting the LG Energy Solution Technology Research Institute, a domestic battery new technology forward base.
Daejeon City is accelerating its efforts to foster the secondary battery industry as a regional strategic industry by investing a total of 88 billion won by 2030.
On July 14, Lee Jangwoo, mayor of Daejeon, visited the LG Energy Solution Technology Research Institute located in Daedeok Innopolis, where he reviewed the current status of research and development and discussed future cooperation plans.
This visit was part of Daejeon City's 'Daedeok Innopolis Private Research Institute and Company Visits' series, which aims to establish Daejeon as the capital of science and nurture advanced industries. It was the second such visit this year.
In the main conference room of the LG Energy Solution Technology Research Institute, Mayor Lee met with Kim Jaeyoung, CTO (Chief Technology Officer), and stated, "The Technology Research Institute is at the heart of South Korea's secondary battery technology, providing the foundation for Daejeon to lead the global battery market." He added, "We will actively foster the secondary battery industry, which has significant potential for expansion into various fields such as robotics, drones, and the defense industry, as Daejeon's next-generation strategic industry."
Since its spin-off from LG Chem in 2020, the LG Energy Solution Technology Research Institute has become a global technology hub, with approximately 40,000 registered patents and about 70,000 patent applications worldwide as of last year. The institute possesses world-class technological capabilities across all areas, from materials such as high-nickel cathodes, silicon anodes, and double-layer coating technology, to cells, packs, battery management systems (BMS), and manufacturing processes.
Originating from the Lucky Central Research Institute established in 1979, the Technology Research Institute was the first private conglomerate research institute in Daedeok Innopolis and has been a leading research institution contributing to the development of Daejeon's industrial ecosystem.
Mayor Lee stated, "This year, we have achieved tangible results, such as selecting 'Rebest,' a next-generation battery company, as the first investment company of Daejeon Investment Finance and signing an investment agreement." He continued, "We will invest a total of 88 billion won by 2030, including 2.5 billion won in research and development (R&D) and 63.3 billion won in infrastructure construction, to foster the secondary battery industry as a core industry in Daejeon."
He also said, "We expect LG Energy Solution to lead regional technology commercialization and serve as a think tank for the secondary battery industry by expanding its workforce and facilities centered on the Daejeon Technology Research Institute." He added, "We will promptly support all administrative procedures, including building permits, traffic impact assessments, and power supply, related to the construction of new research buildings."
