Gwangsan-gu in Gwangju has begun installing fall prevention facilities on manholes and maintaining storm drains in flood-prone areas to prepare for heavy summer rainfall.
On July 14, Gwangsan-gu announced that it will install fall prevention facilities on 110 manholes by the end of this month, using 150 million won in funding provided by Gwangju City. The district will also inspect the 132 existing facilities that have already been installed.

In addition, maintenance of storm drains is underway to minimize flood damage during heavy rain. The district is focusing on preventing drainage blockages caused by the accumulation of fallen leaves, soil, and street tree roots inside the drains.
Since January of this year, Gwangsan-gu has operated its own field team and has dredged and repaired 4,735 storm drains to date. With the recently secured 220 million won in special disaster safety grants, the district will additionally maintain 440 storm drains along a 5.24-kilometer section in the Singa and Cheomdan districts by the end of this month. Separately, the district has also applied for an additional 350 million won in special grants needed for further storm drain dredging.
Park Byungkyu, head of Gwangsan-gu, stated, "We are expediting inspections and maintenance focused on vulnerable areas, in line with the regional characteristics of having many sewage facilities," and added, "We will do our utmost to ensure that citizens can spend the summer safely."
