Conflict Over Tennis Academy Operation With Daughter
Reportedly Felt Ashamed Due to Neighbors' Mockery
In India, a man in his 40s killed his daughter, who was a tennis player. It has been reported that the man had conflicts with his daughter after hearing from neighbors that he was living off the money she earned by running a tennis academy.
On July 11, Indian media outlets such as the Times of India reported that former tennis player Radika Yadav was shot and killed by her father, Deepak Yadav, in Gurugram, India. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on July 10 in the kitchen of their home. Deepak fired multiple shots at his daughter Radika while she was cooking in the kitchen. Kuldeep, Radika's uncle, rushed to the scene after hearing the gunshots and found Radika collapsed. With the help of neighbors, Radika was immediately taken to the hospital, but she was already dead. Deepak was arrested and charged with murder.
It was revealed that Deepak committed the crime due to conflicts over his daughter's operation of the tennis academy. Born in 2000, Radika had recently retired from her tennis career due to injury and had been running a tennis academy. According to police, Deepak stated that he opposed his daughter running the academy and had repeatedly told her to close it, but she did not listen. While Deepak did not object to Radika playing tennis, he was against her opening the academy. In particular, it is reported that Deepak's anger intensified after neighbors mocked him, saying that he was living off Radika's income.
Deepak reportedly told police that he believed there was no need for his daughter to run the academy because he was financially stable from rental income. However, according to the Times of India, Radika did not operate a formal academy but instead booked tennis courts in the city to train young promising players. Deepak is said to have repeatedly urged her to stop even this kind of coaching.
Meanwhile, killing a daughter for not obeying her parents is one aspect of honor killing. Honor killing refers to murder committed by family members on the grounds that a family member has brought shame or dishonor to the family. It is reported that about 5,000 women lose their lives every year due to honor killings. Of these, about one-third of the victims are from India and Pakistan. In February of this year, a father in India was arrested by police for killing his daughter because she was dating a boy from a different social class. During the police investigation, the father stated that he committed the murder because he was afraid his reputation would be tarnished.
In January of this year, a man who had lived in the United States for 25 years and then returned to Pakistan with his family killed his teenage daughter because he was unhappy with her TikTok videos. The daughter had been posting videos on TikTok related to her clothing and lifestyle, which her father had opposed. Such honor killings mainly occur in South Asia, including India, as well as in the Middle East and North Africa. Since many cases do not come to light, it is estimated that as many as 20,000 honor killings occur worldwide each year.
