Installation in Vacant Houses, Steep Slopes, Residential Embankments, and Aging Apartment Complexes
Mapo District in Seoul will significantly expand its Internet of Things (IoT) measurement management system to enhance the safety management of aging and hazardous buildings.
The "Smart IoT Measurement Sensors for Aging and Hazardous Buildings" installed by the district utilize IoT and blockchain technology to detect and transmit real-time data on the tilt and cracks of buildings. The data collected in real time is stored on a blockchain network to prevent tampering or falsification, and is used to determine the cause of incidents and establish measures to prevent recurrence when accidents occur.

Last year, Mapo District installed 34 tilt sensors and 11 crack sensors at 11 locations, including old apartment complexes and traditional markets, to enable real-time monitoring. This year, the district plans to add 64 tilt sensors and 13 crack sensors at 17 locations, such as vacant houses, steep slopes, and residential embankments that have structural safety concerns, and to conduct precise diagnostics in connection with the existing safety monitoring platform.
If displacement exceeding the threshold is detected, responsible public officials, sensor maintenance companies, and technical experts from the Mapo District Safety Management Advisory Group will immediately be dispatched to the site to inspect the situation. If a risk is confirmed, the owner and management entity will be requested to carry out repairs or reinforcements, and in emergency situations, preemptive measures such as evacuating nearby residents will also be taken.
Mapo District stated, "Along with regular maintenance of the existing sensors, we will gradually expand the areas subject to monitoring and continue to establish a proactive and scientific safety management system based on digital technology next year as well."
Park Gangsu, mayor of Mapo District, emphasized, "Safety must take precedence over any other policy," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure that Mapo residents can feel safe in their daily lives by implementing a system that integrates advanced technology into administration."
