Heavy Rain Concentrated on the Southern Coast Including Yeosu and Gangjin
Heavy Rain Warning Lifted, but Rain Expected to Continue Until the 16th
Although more than 130mm of heavy rain fell in Gwangju and Jeonnam, the heavy rain warning was lifted without any significant casualties. The rain is expected to continue until the 16th.
According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on July 14, from the previous day until 6 a.m. on this day, cumulative precipitation reached 137mm in Sori-do, Yeosu; 131mm in Seongjeon, Gangjin; 121mm in Naju; 121mm in Haenam; 103.5mm in Yuchi, Jangheung; 83.5mm in Gangjin; 61.6mm in Wando; 54mm in Jangheung; 50.2mm in Gwangju; 48mm in Yeosu; and 47.2mm in Gwangyang.
Over 130mm of heavy rain poured in Gwangju and Jeonnam over two days, but the heavy rain warning was lifted without any casualties, and the rain is expected to continue until the 16th. Yonhap News
During the same period, the highest hourly rainfall was recorded at 35mm in Baegya, Yeosu; 32mm in Bukil, Haenam; and 30mm in Naju. In some areas, intense rainfall of around 10 to 30mm per hour was observed.
The heavy rain warning that had been issued for 19 cities and counties in Gwangju and Jeonnam was completely lifted at midnight on this day.
The Jeonnam Fire Department received 16 rain-related reports, including one case of drainage support and 15 cases of safety measures, but there were no casualties. The previous day, some flights at Yeosu Airport were canceled due to severe weather.
There were no damage reports in Gwangju. From the afternoon of the previous day, Gwangju City preemptively restricted access to 449 high-risk areas, including 57 stepping stone bridges over rivers, 336 river entry and exit points, 11 riverside parking lots, 3 multipurpose plazas, and 37 trails on Mudeungsan Mountain.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecast that rain would start again from the morning of this day, with an additional 10 to 50mm expected by the afternoon of the 15th, and another 10 to 40mm by the morning of the 16th. There is also a possibility of strong rain accompanied by gusty winds, thunder, and lightning.
A Korea Meteorological Administration official stated, "While temperatures will drop slightly during the rain, after the rain ends, humidity will rise and the maximum daytime heat index is expected to reach around 31 degrees Celsius."
