Established in 1970, Gwangmyeong Traditional Market is the seventh largest market in the country. However, the existing public parking lot at the market is small, and a large commercial district has formed around Gwangmyeong Sageori Station, resulting in a chronic parking shortage in the area.
The newly constructed public parking lot is located beneath the park site at 105-8, Gwangmyeong-dong, which is part of the Gwangmyeong Zone 4R redevelopment project. The facility has a total floor area of 5,535 square meters and provides 176 parking spaces. The parking spaces are divided into 88 standard spaces, 52 expanded spaces, 9 compact car spaces, 6 spaces for people with disabilities, 11 electric vehicle spaces, and 10 family-friendly spaces.
The parking lot is equipped with a control system that allows real-time monitoring of available spaces, and three elevators have been installed to connect the underground lot to the ground-level park.
From 10:00 a.m. on July 14 until midnight on July 31, the city will open the parking lot to the public free of charge. Starting August 1, the facility will switch to paid operation. During the free opening period, the city plans to gather feedback from users and work on system stabilization.
Meanwhile, the ground-level park above the parking lot will be donated to the city by the Gwangmyeong Zone 4R Redevelopment Association after its completion, and will be opened to the public starting in November.
Park Seungwon, mayor of Gwangmyeong, stated, "The newly built underground public parking lot will not only resolve the parking shortage but also serve as a catalyst to revitalize the traditional market and the old downtown commercial district. We will continue to establish infrastructure that enhances citizen convenience and invigorates the local economy."
