Pukyong National University Institute of Global Regional Studies Holds 17th Pan-Pacific Colloquium

Highlighting the Roles of Korea, China, Japan, and ASEAN Amidst the Indo-Pacific Situation and the Return of Trump

The Institute of Global Regional Studies at Pukyong National University (Director: Park Sanghyun) held the 17th Pan-Pacific Colloquium on July 7 at the Aram Hall of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business Building.

At this colloquium, Professor Kitti Prasirtsuk from the Department of Political Science at Thammasat University in Thailand was invited to deliver a keynote lecture titled "Indo-Pacific and Trump 2.0 in the Asia-Pacific: The Roles of China, Japan, Korea, and ASEAN Amidst a Shaky Global Order."


In his lecture, Professor Kitti provided an in-depth analysis of the impact of the Indo-Pacific strategy on East Asian and Southeast Asian diplomatic strategies, especially in the context of increasing uncertainty in global affairs due to the intensification of US-China strategic competition and the potential return of former President Trump. He also emphasized the importance of diplomatic responses and the balancing roles of Korea, China, Japan, and ASEAN countries in the region.


The subsequent discussion, moderated by Professor Jung Beommou from the Department of International Area Studies at Pukyong National University, featured Professor Moon Kihong as a discussant, allowing for a variety of perspectives on the topic.


Park Sanghyun, Director of the Institute of Global Regional Studies, stated, "This colloquium was a meaningful occasion that examined the power realignment and changes in the regional diplomatic landscape in Asia, focusing on the diplomatic strategies of China, Japan, Korea, and ASEAN countries. It also served as an opportunity to further expand the academic horizon of our institute's core objective, 'Global-Regional Connectivity.'"


The Institute of Global Regional Studies at Pukyong National University has been selected for the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Program (2020-2026) by the National Research Foundation of Korea, and is conducting focused research under the theme "Peaceful Co-evolution of Multiple Civilizations in the Pan-Pacific as a Mega-Region: Regional Integration, National Rivalry, and Urban Hospitality."
